LABORATORY LESSON 3: You and Your Studies (from 14th to 19th September)

Ваши успехи:

DOING A QUESTIONNAIRE

1. Using the questions in the questionnaire below, make and write down fourteen true statements about yourself with ‘always’ (A), ‘usually/often’ (B), ‘sometimes’ (C), ‘rarely’ (D), ‘never’ (E) as in the model. Comment on each statement to make it more clear using the vocabulary under study (see the vocabulary lists from Unit 1).

Model:

1. Nervousness while taking an exam or test hinders me from doing well. — E (never)

Statement: Nervousness while taking an exam or test never hinders me from doing well.

Comment: Being a fully grown up person, I’ve learned to resist pressures and keep calm in most stressful situations. Generally I concentrate well and that helps me to remember things I learned in preparation for the upcoming exam. So, I usually don’t feel too much stressed in the exam,  and try to do my best.

 Questionnaire “Test your Anxiety”

  1. Nervousness while taking an exam or test hinders me from doing well.
  2. In a course where I have been doing poorly, my fear of a bad grade cuts down my efficiency.
  3. When I am poorly prepared for an exam or test, I get upset, and do less well than even my restricted knowledge should allow.
  4. The more important the examination, the less well I seem to do.
  5. During exams or tests, I block on questions to which I know the answers, even though I might remember them  as soon as the exam is over.
  6. I find that my mind goes blank at the beginning of an exam, and it takes me a few minutes before I can function.
  7. I am so tired from worrying about an exam, that I find I almost don’t care how well I do by the time I start the test.
  8. I look forward to the end of the exam.
  9. When I start a test, some things may distract me.
  10. Time pressure on an exam causes me to do worse than the rest of the group under similar conditions.
  11. I enjoy taking an easy exam more than a difficult one.
  12. I find myself reading exam questions without understanding them, and I must go back over them so that they will make sense.
  13. The more important the exam or test, the worse I seem to do.
  14. When I don’t do well on difficult items at the beginning of an exam, it tends to upset me  so that I block on even easy questions later on.

2. Count the number of As, Bs, Cs, Ds and Es, then check the results. Translate your results into Russian (in writing).

Results

More As and Bs: Very anxious. It’s hard for you to enjoy life on any consistent level. You’re hardly ever experiencing a peace of mind. You’re often fearful, worrisome, and unhappy. You don’t like being this way but you don’t know what to do to change. Things are too much work and no one understands the way you feel. You wear yourself out with your thoughts and «What-if» thinking. You can be happy and confident again. You just need a clear plan of action and the right tools.

More Cs: Rather anxious. Your level of affectedness by anxiety and panic is not severe but strong enough to affect your life and your person on a regular basis. You tend to let things get to you. You are an over reactor and you’re probably very emotional. You’re sensitive and take things personally. You’re a worrier and a «what-if» thinker. You might have a hard time being assertive, especially with certain people. You probably don’t manage stress well.

More Ds and Es: Calm. You probably manage stress well, think positive most of the time, and don’t use alcohol or medication to excess. You probably manage conflict fairly well, are a decent communicator, and have no problem being assertive when necessary. However, you clearly have things to work on, and could benefit from learning some life management skills that you’ve probably never had the opportunity to learn.

3. Write if you agree with the results and why.
